European Exchange Academy Beelitz is located at the Beelitz-Heilstätten wich is situated in a large forested area just outside Berlin. Begun in 1896 the large complex of buildings served as a private tuberculosis clinic until the end of the Second World War, after which it became a hospital for the Soviet armed forces in Europe until their withdrawal in 1993.
Although a few of the buildings have now been fully restored, much of the vast 200-hectare site still remains unused. The district of Potsdam-Mittelmark and the town of Beelitz are actively promoting the renewal of the area, particularly through sustainable cultural initiatives. Over the past few years a number of exhibitions and presentations have been organised including The Ring by Christian Boltanski, Ilja Kabakov and Jean Kalman in 1999 and It Happened One Night, a solo exhibition by Michael Timpson in 2001. And the EEA exhibitions; ‘The Covert Town’ 2003, ‘Pavilion’ 2004, ‘The Image versus The Word’ 2005. ‘Structural Distress – Monument for Masses’ 2006. ‘Scene-Change’ 2007.
